What to Pack for Uni (Clothing)

Hello, everyone! In two weeks, I will be returning to university for my second year, so I am currently in the process of packing up my suitcases. As I only have so much room for items to pack, I have to be very conscious about what I am bringing, or rather, what I need as opposed to what I just want.

Fortunately, my parents will be flying in a few weeks upon my return, so they will be able to bring me more of my clothing, and I have also left some clothing in the city waiting for my arrival. That being said, I decided to prepare a list of what I will be needing in the meanwhile, and I thought I'd share it for those of you who are returning to university, going for your first year, or maybe even going on a long excursion and tend to overpack (like myself)!

Disclaimer: Depending on where you go to university, the necessity of these items may vary. I go to college in San Francisco, so I need to pack a bit warmer than what I typically wear from where I am from. Warmer clothing is a good idea for fall/winter semester regardless of where you may be, however! Unless you're in....Australia or something of course! I am also by no means an expert nor am I claiming to be, I just thought I'd share my thought process when packing with all of you.

01. Underwear! Probably the most important thing to have for university is underwear! I love fancy underwear and lingerie, and I personally use it as an accessory, so all forms of underwear can be highly multifunctional. Make sure you have at least one pair of knickers for each day of the week (more if you prefer not to do laundry every week, as that can get a big pricey!), at least five bras (as those do not have to be washed as often!).

I, personally, like to have a few pairs of cheaper cotton undergarments for those you know what sort of weeks, but having pretty underwear to just wear for yourself also does wonders for your confidence! I consider my suspender belts something I need in my wardrobe for any occasion!

02. Stockings, Socks & Tights. I own many, many tights in all sorts of colours and patterns. I've decided that the only colours I should have at the moment should be ones that go with any outfit, since it can get a bit chilly unexpectedly. The colours I found to be the most versatile are black (black tights can be worn with everything), grey, and navy. The hues can be worn in a professional environment, which is good for job interviews and such.

Of course, socks are essential for college life, whether you are adding a pop of colour, accessorising, wearing them without shoes, walking around your dorm building, wearing them with shoes to prevent blistering, or just adding them as a layer over your feet to keep warm, socks are probably the most important thing to pack!

As a stocking enthusiast, the stocking colours I found most useful for everyday wear were black, nude, and white. This is optional, of course, but I always wear my stockings with a suspender belt (as I always do regardless of the stockings' adherence)!

03. Cardigans & Jumpers. Probably imperative in most climates, cardigans and jumpers come in all sorts of fabrics and weights, and are the perfect way to cover up in a casual and comfortable manner. I love pairing cardigans with dresses and cinching it in with a belt, or a jumper over a collared top and cuffed trousers.  No matter where I am, I like to have a cardigan or jumper in my bag in case of that unexpected chill--so they are most definitely a university essential!

04. Trousers & Jeans. I am not a trousers girl. Seeing me in a pair of jeans is indeed a rare sight. However, a pair of neat trousers and a pair of blue jeans are vital articles of clothing when in university. The trousers can be dressy and job-appropriate, and the jeans can be comfortable and easy when you're on the go, whether to class or out and about. Not to mention, they will protect your legs from the cool wind. Sometimes, on really cold days, I will wear tights underneath whichever pair of pants I may have on, just for that extra warmth.

If you consider blue jeans too plain and dull for yourself, look for patterned denim!

05. Blouses. Solid coloured blouses, collared blouses, long sleeve blouses, etc. are very much needed for university as well. Possibly the most versatile of clothing items, blouses can be professional, formal, casual, playful, girly, or more reserved. Having at least one white button down will help you to come up with millions of outfit combinations.

06. Coats. Weather is so unpredictable, so it is vital to own at least one thick coat to protect yourself from the cold, especially at nighttime. There are so many different types of coats to choose from, whether they be fur, a peacoat, a parka, a trench coat, or even my personal favourite--a cape! Your best bet in colour would be black for this item, as it will match anything!

07. A fancy dress. You never know if you'll be asked to dinner by that person you've been eyeing in your liberal arts class or need to attend a formal event, so packing a nice dress that can be dressed up or down is crucial! This can range from a little black dress to a more elaborately intricate one, just make sure you can wear it to all sorts of possible events.

08. Work Out Clothing. This one is not a necessity for everyone, but most colleges have a gymnasium for students to exercise, or maybe you just want to take a run around campus. Work out clothes can be useful for this, and they can also double as sleepwear!

Which brings us to our final section...

09. Pyjamas. Pyjamas can consist of whatever you feel most comfortable sleeping in. You could wear a vintage lacy nightgown, a tank top and sweats, or even just a T-shirt and your underwear. Just make sure that you pack something comfy to sleep in!

Other items: Some other things that you could bring are a pencil skirt (for job interviews or presentations) as well as other skirts, hoodies, a jean jacket, etc. I personally wear dresses almost 24/7 so I try to manoeuvre some of my favourites in the mix. But everyone is different! If you have something you cannot live without, make room for it!

That's about all I consider very necessary for school, but remember--if you forget something, there will always be shops around your campus, or you could always have something shipped to you.

I'll write a post about what types of shoes to bring next time! Thank you for reading, whether it's your first year or you're returning to uni, good luck!

The Petite Pixie!

Hello, everyone! I'm very excited to announce that I am currently working on a new project and blog called The Petite Pixie! I felt that Love & Velvet was missing something, so I tried to venture off on my own and discover what that was. As a result, I came up with my new blog that is going to be 100% me, where I will share my outfits and experiences with you.

As for Love & Velvet, I will be taking a small break to allow time to prepare The Petite Pixie. In the meantime, I would love it if you were to follow me as I embark on my new journey with The Petite Pixie, by following on BlogLovin', Tumblr, Twitter, etc (links above).

Thank you all very much!

P.S. I may not have as much time for Love & Velvet, if I do choose to continue it, so if you are interested in becoming an author and sharing some DIY, review, outfit, decor, or anything else we post on here, please email me at sgarcia@live.co.uk and let's get talking!

DIY: Airport Chauffeur Sign

As you already know, this past Saturday evening, my beloved boyfriend Chris flew all the way from Connecticut to Hawaii to see little ol' me! I have been counting down the days since May, so you can only imagine my excitement with planning what to wear, activities, where we are going, etc. My favourite idea that I came up with, that many have done before, was a airport chauffeur sign that I would hold up in baggage claim. As some of you may know, I am a colossal How I Met Your Mother fan, and one of my favourite television couples (Lily and Marshall, of course!) would do the whole chauffeur sign bit for each other every time one would return from a trip.

By now, it has become a slight cliché, and maybe a bit overdone, but I still think it's romantic and was never really given the opportunity to do it before, so I made the decision! To make it more fun, I came up with a more creative route than just his name on a piece of paper...no, this had to be a work of art! Since I will be spending the week showing my darling boyfriend my favourite spots on the island, I've prepared this little DIY to show you how I made mine! Hopefully it can hold you over until the next post in the meantime!

First, you'll need a full size piece of poster board paper in any colour of your choosing. I went with white because it can serve as a better canvas for a variety of paint and glitter colours! Cut the poster board into two halves of equal size.

Next, take one half piece of the poster board and draw a little figure of an aeroplane with pencil first, then outline with a thicker marker. Mine obviously isn't proper under flight regulations to be allowed to fly, but we can pretend it's a little cartoon version of what a plane might look like.

Put the plane cut-out to the side, and take the other half of the poster board. Now the fun part--paint! You can either do this with the plane or the background, like I am doing, just so it pops a little bit. I chose purple paint because it looks like a night sky and it's Chris' favourite colour! For the best application, try a sponge brush like the one pictured above. Wait for the paint to dry.

Now it's time to glue your aeroplane onto the background. You can choose to flip it and hide the line like I did (well, actually, I messed up the first time which is why I flipped it...) or keep it the same way you drew it, line included. Once the glue is dry, take your pencil again, and begin to write the name of whomever you are picking up at the airport in whatever style you desire.

Lastly, I embellished the sign with one of my favourite media, ~*glitter glue*~! And there you have it--your own personalised and fun airport chauffeur sign. Whether you are meeting up with a friend, a relative, or significant other, this is certainly a fun way to greet them upon their arrival, and it will catch attention from fellow legitimate chauffeurs who will wish that was the sign they could hold. Then, after your visitor leaves, they can take the sign along with them as a souvenir!

P.S. Expect some birthday celebration posts coming your way very soon! My birthday is tomorrow, Tuesday the 6th of August!

A Little Peak Into My Bedroom...

This summer is the last time I will be living at home for such an extended period, and it's so exciting to look forward to a future in San Francisco! However, I do love my bedroom here in Hawaii because of what I've done to it upon returning from school! It makes me eager to start decorating my future apartment... I've already jotted down ideas and purchased some little bits and bobs for decoration and such! Since I just cleaned it and prepped it nicely for Chris' visit tomorrow, I thought I'd share my space with all of you!

Firstly, my favourite spot in my bedroom--my bed! Admittedly, I do not actually have a bed. I used to, but when I was younger, I went through different phases of bed bases, and eventually came to the conclusion that just a mattress on the floor would allow me more space! However, for storage purposes, I added a metal rolling bed frame, and now I keep items under there, which allows for less clutter.

My bed is full of my favourite pals--Pikachu, Quasimodo, Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet, a Build-a-Bear my brother gave me for my birthday, and Siegfried, my beloved kitty Chris gave me for our one month anniversary! The pillow on the right has Chris' shirt on it (人´∀`*)

Above my bed, I use my accessories--purses, sunnies, hats, etc. as decoration! One of my favourite features is the little sunglasses display I created under my shelf. All I needed was a pretty ribbon and thumb tacks, and I have a spectrum of cute sunnies and frames!

What would a style blogger be without her closet? I recently changed a few things, including organising my clothing by colour! It is so much easier to find the exact piece I want by doing this. A few of my shoes are also easy to eye in that nifty shoe shelving unit.
My bed may be my favourite spot to lounge around, but without a doubt, my favourite spot in my bedroom to look at is my vanity! It's decorated head to toe with photos of me and my friends, beauty products, jewellery, hair accessories, and the best part--my Amadeus shrine (I'm a wee bit obsessed)! This spot is where you will find me getting ready for the day and writing posts for Love & Velvet!
Fun Fact: My Amadeus shrine consists of the original soundtrack on vinyl, the song book, the DVD, the DVD special edition, the VHS, the soundtrack, and the special edition soundtrack. Bluray not pictured.
Finally, underneath the window in my room sits my main source for storing my most favourite things--my bookshelf! I use my bookshelf as a writing desk as well, as you can see by the journalling supplies on top of it! My bookshelf holds my books (of course), my collection of Teen Vogue magazines (since September 2009!) some other saved magazines (particularly if they have Emma Stone on the cover!) and fun little trinkets, like my vampire candle holder (bottom right).
As you can see on top of the jewellery box, more Mozart! And in front of the pens--Quasimodo again! The top left corner is an autographed photo of Kris Allen
So there's a little tour of my bedroom, my workspace, and my inspiration. I hope you weren't too overwhelmed by clutter, as I do have a lot of it lying around. I do look forward to getting my new dorm room together by next month! I'll be sure to show that off to you as well.

Weekly Wishes (2 August 2013)

  1. Vintage Southern Belle Gown ($79.00)
  2. Lizzie McGuire DVD Box Set ($34.99)

  4. Valley of the Dolls ($11.62)
  5. Essie Nail Varnish in Madison Ave-Hue ($8.00)
  6. Rachel Antonoff Birdie Forever Sweatshirt ($74.99)
The final countdown week until Chris finally arrives has been one of the slowest weeks of my life! I'm still in the process of recovering from my oral surgery last week. Thankfully, I've been kept busy by The Bachelorette, ice cream, Project Runway, Lizzie McGuire on YouTube (hence it being on my wishlist this week!) and lots of naps! Today is all about cleaning the house and preparing it for our guests...and tomorrow too!

I've been craving this Rachel Antonoff 'Birdie Forever' sweatshirt well... forever. Especially considering I just got my Rachel Antonoff red and clear brogans in the mail! (Also because my ultimate crush Nate Ruess has been seen wearing it...) It just looks so comfy and fun to lounge around my dorm building with, don't you think? Plus, San Francisco can get mighty chilly.

Hope you all had a more active week than I did! It's going to be a hectic few weeks coming up, but I will definitely have a lot of photos!
